Essentials oils
The essential oils are fragrant, hydrophobicand volatile substances, synthesised from the mainly reproductive or anti pathogenic structures of aromatic plants.
Chemically related to various organic molecules like alcols, phenols, aldehydes and ketones, they are usually lighter than water and not water soluble.
Apart from some exceptions (like lavender and melissa) they must never be used pure as in doing so would result in skin outbreaks.
Depending on the plants from which they derive they are concentrated in fruits, flowers or bark.
Extraction is the longest and most delicate phase as the essence of the plant itself must be harvested and as such its most fragile and precious substance, while leaving its quality intact.
Fully respecting the balsamic timing in order to safegard the richness of the active principles, OM distills the plants characteristic of the mediterranean flora in vaporized currents.
As soon as they are picked from the fields and in the areas adjacent to the laboratories of Montauto, the plants are loaded directly into the distillor where the steam naturally gathers the aromatic components which, after being condensed, make up the essential oil.
How to use the essential oil Even if they possess numerous important properties, internal use of essential oils must be under strict supervision of a therapist.
Leaving medical applications aside, with the correct diluted dosage there are various ways in which they can, in complete safety, make our daily life more pleasant.
In the bath
Under the effect of water and heat, the skin's pores dilate allowing the body to absorb the active principles of various essential oils, while the vapours inhaled intensify the beneficial effect. The essential oils are not water-soluble and should be diluted in variable doses, ranging from five to twenty drops per bath with an adequate quantity of water. OM offers two ready to use bath oils which invigorate and relax. Alternatively it offers a neutral base which can be personalized to create the desired effect using the various essential oils suggested.
As a massage
Thanks to their extreme volatility, the essential oils cross the skin barriers and easily penetrate the organism. The skin is therefore a perfect channel to transmit their active principles. Keeping with the rules of correct massage oil dilution (in this case 50 drops in 100ml of vegetable oil), one can produce a variety of effects according to the pre-selected essential oil. For example, true lavender can help to reestablish serenity, juniper stretches tired muscles, rosemary, thyme and eucalyptus facilitate breathing.
As an air freshener
Some essential oils have a recognised disinfecting effect, thyme for example, and contribute to keeping the air pure. Others have a relaxing or stimulating effect. Some drops in an electric diffusor are sufficient to make the air in your living environment cleaner and more fragrant.
In the kitchen
The essential oils can also be used in the kitchen. Rosemary, thyme, myrtle and origan, diluted in a good extra-virgin olive oil, can be used to add flavour to dishes. Citrus essential oils are excellent in making the taste of a dessert more intriguing.
